IDC Technologies successfully held their first South African conference for 2015 last week on the 27th & 28th May. The conference focused on the two key topics; Safety Control Systems, and Hazardous Areas.
The conference featured sixteen presentations, including two keynote presentations from Gary Friend (Extech Safety Systems), and Ian Hetherington (Vantage). The conference welcomed speakers from TÜV Rheinland, Exida South Africa, and BFluor Chemicals, to name a few.
Day one of the conference commenced with keynote speaker Ian Hetherington presenting a one hour paper entitled CE Compliance and South African Machinery Regulations. The paper discussed the global corporate influence on local operations in South Africa to comply with CE, and how South African industries can obtain the CE Mark
for export to the European Union. It also outlined a comparison of the differing approaches to the SA OshAct machinery regulations and the machinery directive 2006/42/EC.
The presentation on day one which stood out the most was entitled Assessment of the Credibility of Process Alarms as a Layer of Protection, and was presented by Nirmal Narotam (PAS Automation Services). Nirmal presented a novel work process to determine the credibility of a process alarm when used as an IPL.
Another presentation on day one which should be mentioned was entitled Industrial Cyber Security and Control Systems– Protection against Cyber Threats, and was presented by Cobus Pool (Proconics). The presentation summarised the international and local state of affairs, investigate the threat landscape and international best practice.
Day two of the conference began with a keynote presentation from Gary Friend (Extech Safety Systems) and was entitled Exi: Intrinsic Safety. The presentation looked at the origins and principles of IS, including hazardous area zoning and the implications

The response from delegates has been overwhelming! The mix of professional expertise and industry knowledge at the conference created an interactive and engaging conference.
