It was a double feature for IDC Technologies as they hosted their second Canadian event in a two week period – following on from the Safety Control Systems Conference, the Dangerous Goods Conference took place at the Executive Royal Hotel on 2nd & 3nd December. In attendance were delegates from local and international organizations such as Aerocorp Avionic Solutions, North Cariboo Air, University of Calgary, Government of the Northwest Territories, PREP Services International Ltd., Air Canada Cargo, Suncor, Government of Alberta, Air Creebec, Baker Hughes Canada Company, Fedex Freight Inc., Canadian Council for Aviation and Airspace, and Lehder Environmental Services Ltd., just to name a few.
The conference was opened by keynote speaker Mark Roehler – Principal, Lehder, whose presentation entitled The GHS System is Now Ready for Implementation, are you?, gave an insight into the purpose, scope and application of GHS worldwide, while covering the current state of Canada’s transition to GHS and how the GHS will affect businesses in Canada. The rest of the morning featured presentations from PREP Services International Ltd., Air Canada Cargo, and LPG Emergency Response Corp. The afternoon sessions kicked off with Jean-Claude Morin – President, MD-UN Quebec who presented a highly informative and relevant case study about Lessons Learnt from the LAC Mégnatic Train Derailment Disaster; giving delegates an overview of the events, the complicated logistics required to achieve the clean-up, and how effective coordination with local fire fighters, police and city employees was imperative. Not to be upstaged was Pierre Boies – President & Dangerous Goods Regulatory Expert, Zone Conform Inc. whose riveting presentation on The Pain of Prevention in the Dangerous Goods World kept delegates enthralled and delivered effective strategies to manage threats and risks, and explore obstacles that exist towards prevention.
Day two of the conference commenced with keynote speaker Trevor Howard – Manager, Cargo Safety & Dangerous Goods Standards, Air Canada Cargo giving a presentation on Dangerous Goods in Air Transport – How a thought turns into a proposal and finally into a regulation. The rest of day two featured presentations from PREP Services International Ltd., Alberta Defensive Tactics Training, Danatec Educational Services Ltd., Lehder Environmental Services Ltd., P bar Y Safety Consultants, and Jamer Holdings.
Special mention goes to Terry Penney – Safety Professional, P bar Y Safety Consultants and Trevor Howard – Manager, Cargo Safety & Dangerous Goods standards, Air Canada Cargo, whose presentations were rated most valuable by attending delegates.
The response from delegates has been overwhelming!
