The 2nd Radio Comms Conference was held by IDC Technologies in Johannesburg, South Africa on the 26th and 27th of November. The event welcomed many delegates from organisations across the globe such as Motorola, Poynting, IEEE, LS telcom, Beyond Wireless, and many more.

Day one of the event proceeded with keynote speaker Peter Lange, a senior analyst from BuddeComm exploring the topic of LTE technology. Peter examined the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, while discussing different deployment strategies and looks at the status of LTE in Africa and worldwide.
The rest of the morning featured papers from Inopsis, Beyond Wireless Technology and Eskom. Dion Rachelson, the managing director of Beyond Wireless Technology presented a morning case study regarding remotely monitoring assets and equipment using a GSM network. This case study explored how assets and equipment can be remotely monitored using the GSM network with a live demonstration of a cloud based solution. The case study featured practical considerations such as GSM technology, benefits of SaaS and Cloud, business benefits of this kind of wireless solution, and the international comparison of device certification.
In the afternoon presentations were held by speakers from Omnitronics, ViaTech, Osiris Technical Systems and Poynting Holdings Ltd.

Day two of the event commenced with keynote speaker Dr André Fourie, CEO of Poynting Holdings Ltd discussing the topic of LTE/4G: the emergence of powerful business models for fixed wireless data using outdoor antenna/s. The rest of the day featured presentations from IEEE, TLC Engineering, SKA Project South Africa, Sagittar Communication Solutions, South Africa Radio Communication Services, Zoya Technology and South African Radio League. Special mention to Selaelo Matlhane from Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project South Africa for delivering an excellent presentation on Mobile Trunked Radio for Karoo Astronomy Reserve which was highly commended by the attendees of the conference.

Overall, the event was a success as we were privileged to have a great selection of speakers and delegates from a wide array of industries which provided the guests to discuss important issues from all angles. The mix of expertise and industry knowledge at the conference created an interactive and engaging environment for all attendees to share their opinions.

Digital radio, networking in industrial communications, next generation radio technology, RFID, WSN, frequency planning, interference avoidance, electrical engineering and control of transmission and substations, wireless application at mines, path loss, fibre optics communication, SCADA and how it relates to communication, DSSS based technologies & various technologies on tracking (asset vehicle), low frequency radio communications and antenna design for low frequencies, GSM service providers, current and new technologies and microwave technologies.
