IDC Technologies recently hosted the 4th Hazardous Areas Conference at the Mantra on Russell Hotel in central Melbourne right near China Town on the 15th, 16th & 17th July 2014. The event attracted delegates from all over Australia with representatives from Woodside, Thales Australia, Liquip, Kockums Bulk Systems, Jemena, J T Day, Austdac, Bechtel and APA just to name a few.
Attendance by State:
The event attracted a diverse selection of speakers who offered their industry knowledge freely to the delegates and helped them work through their hazardous areas issues. Several sessions offered interactive elements such as quizzes, case studies and puzzles. Eliot Hield-Ryder from Newson Gale in the UK even included a fun activity involving everyone blowing up balloons and using salt and pepper to demonstrate how static electricity works. These activities made the forum more engaging for the attendees and provided a welcoming platform for delegates wanting to learn more about hazardous areas. Networking and Q&A sessions were encouraged throughout the conference and many drinks and in depth discussions were enjoyed.
As voted by our delegates, the top five presentations were:
1. Chris Agius – Executive Secretary, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) IECEx
TOPIC: International Certification in the Field of Ex
TOPIC: Testing / Certification – Making sense of it all
2. Neil Dennis – Technical Director – Minerals & Industry, AECOM
TOPIC: Current and Future Directions for Hazardous Area Standard
3. Hans Slagter – DEHN+SÖHNE

4. Randall Makin – Lead Explosive Area HA Auditor, Waterline Projects
