The High Voltage Forum held 19-20 March at the Adina Hotel in Brisbane attracted over 70 delegates and proved an effective platform for industry networking and knowledge sharing.
With a line up of twelve speakers from a variety of areas within the industry, delegates were exposed to discussion and interaction with regards to high voltage standards, challenges and issues with the opportunity to business network and share information with other delegates within the industry.
Tony Gillespie, Power Engineering Consultant, Gillespie Power Consultancy, rated best speaker at the forum followed closely by Jason Mayer, Technical Director, Energy, Aurecon who presented a paper with inputs from Dr Geoff Walker and then Shawn Nielsen who presented a paper with inputs from Professor Gerard Ledwich, both from Queensland University of Technology.
With 32 years in the electrical supply industry and serving on many National committees, Tony Gillespie discussed the differences and evolution of AS 2067 & AS/NZS and compared safety limits of the Dalziel equation and IEC 60479 Part 1. IEEE 80 deterministic & EG-0 risk based earthing concepts. Addressing application recommendations for earthing fenced substations and other sites, Tony also provided a risk case study, exploring duty of care, due diligence and mitigation when dealing with HV earthing. He then proposed possible future directions for earthing standards dealing with substations, delivering a relevant and valuable presentation.
As a Technical Director and senior electrical engineer with 17 years experience in power system analysis and design, Jason Mayer’s experience includes extensive power system analysis from basic load flow and fault analysis to complex studies including harmonic analysis, earthing, insulation co-ordination and stability studies. He has also been involved in design, construction and commissioning of indoor and outdoor high voltage substations up to 132 kV.
In Jason’s presentation, he discussed the process of risk based earthing design described in the ENA EG-0 Power System Earthing Guide. AS2067 describes that a risk based approach is required and whilst some typical acceptance criteria is provided, a direct reference to EG-0 is not provided (at present).
Jason illustrated that it is clear that EG-0 meets the requirements of a risk based approach to earthing design and should be the first choice for designers wanting to meet AS2067 requirements. He addressed topics such as, ‘What is EG-0 and how is it used?’ and ‘What does it replace?’ and ‘How does EG-0 compare to other standards?’ and ‘How do we document the risk assessment?’ Additionally, Jason presented a case study of a typical project giving a well rounded speaker presentation.
Formerly a Senior Engineer at ESKOM, South Africa, then working at Schneider Electric Australia as a medium voltage technology specialist, Shawn Nielsen joined Queensland University of Technology as a Senior Research Fellow working on transformer condition monitoring. Shawn delivered a paper that demonstrated a push towards on-line condition monitoring due to the prevailing economic squeeze felt by most owners of large oil filled power transformers, where getting the most value out of these critical and costly assets becoming of paramount importance. Shawn Nielsen and Professor Gerard’s paper generated much interest from delegates with discussion on the latest developments in the field of on-line condition monitoring, concentrating on winding temperature monitoring, partial discharge (pd) measurement and dissolved gas analyses (DGA). Shawn was the centre of many questions during the discussion panel to close the forum.
Professor Alex Baitch, Principal BES (Aust) Pty Ltd, Chairman Standards Australia Committee EL43 High Voltage Installations, Honorary Professorial Fellow University of Wollongong, delivered a workshop and a keynote presentation addressing his current work on the revision of AS 2067 standard. Prof Alex Baitch looked at High Voltage substation design issues, familiarising delegates with the detailed requirements of the wide range of issues that need to be considered in the design of high voltage substations and installations. Additionally, he addressed the current developments associated with the AS 2067 and IEC61936-1 Standards in which he clearly demonstrated his vast experience and knowledge within these areas.
